Help Others
One of the members of my church was seriously injured in an automobile accident some months ago. I had not seen Kenny at our weekly service so, I inquired and discovered that he was now confined to a wheel chair as he had very little use of his legs. After several telephone calls from me, Kenny agreed to attend the weekly service if I helped him; which I did. Yes, it was difficult and yes, it took an extra two hours out of my Sunday but, I feel better knowing that I am making a difference. There will be a lot of need in the coming months for help from those of us who can give assistance to others. As a retired builder, I can still repair and replace what is broken in homes and businesses. I have maintained good health over the course of my life and now it is an asset not just to me but, to others who can not do for themselves. Do what you can. Before I joined my church several years ago, I was moving to another location. I asked one of my friends whether he knew of some young kids who could assist me. I gave him a time and a location. My request had been for “…a couple of strong young kids who were not afraid of work”. At the appointed time and place, I watched as four young men approached me and I thought – as I am an old builder – “I will find out how much they expect to make hourly and, after ten minutes, cut two of them loose” (obviously the slower two). So, it went like this: “Good Morning, Fellas, how much are you expecting to make today?’’ The apparent spokesman for the group replied, “Oh, we are not doing this for money…we heard that you needed help”. Having been a California General Contractor for five decades, I had never heard these words spoken before; not seriously, anyway. Brother Sanders went on to decline any attempt I made at payment and simply said, “the Lord is watching”. In two hours, the four young men accomplished what would have taken me ten hours of work and two days of recuperation. I thanked them repeatedly and made one final attempt to pay them. “If you give us your telephone number, we will have someone contact you with more information about our church”. I love this church. For the remainder of my life, I never expect to need money. Food – or other forms of help – may become a reality in this uncertain future. I know, that no matter what my need, this church would answer the call. I do not expect to need help, as I have always been self sufficient but, it sure is good to know that you have backup. MY CHURCH IS MY STRENGTH AND MY COMMUNITY: THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE DOING GOD’S WORK.
